New advocacy areas

Following the success of our Ireland campaign, the Permits Foundation Board has approved a new priority advocacy destination: Japan!

The Foundation is also looking at advocacy in Costa Rica and the Republic of Korea. Our other priority destinations remain: the US, India, China, Singapore and South Africa.

US elections

With a newly elected President of the United States, the immigration policy landscape is likely to change, restrictions are anticipated. Our advocacy will adapt accordingly. Permits Foundation will send out an update in the new year.

Meeting with the European Commission

In September, Permit Foundation’s Director met with members of the Commission Legal Migration Unit in Brussels.

We raised concerns around Member State’s who have not yet implemented the family work access clauses in EU Directives as well as employer support for broader, more inclusive definition of recognised family members.

Next stop Singapore

As a result of restrictions introduced in 2021, the Letter of Consent route is no longer available for most spouses of highly-skilled international employees wishing to work in Singapore. Details of the new rules are available here.

Over the next three months the Foundation is gathering feedback from our network. We will relay key findings to the Ministry of Manpower in Q2 2025 (post election).

Opportunity in South Africa

Permits Foundation was pleased to participate in Xpatweb’s Annual Global Mobility Conference in Johannesburg, which featured high level corporate and government speakers.

With immigration reform continuing apace, we will continue to build on the recommendations made in our recent submission to South Africa’s government (with a special focus on the Digital Nomad Visa and the Trusted Employer Scheme).

UK MAC review

The UK Government has commissioned the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) to review the ‘minimum income requirement’ (MIR) for British citizens and settled residents who wish to bring their non-EEA partners and children to the UK.

Pending network feedback, the Foundation may respond ahead of the deadline for evidence (11 December 2024).

Making connections

In September, Permits Foundation presented to the ECA Government Forum in London. In October, we hosted a roundtable at the Forum for Expat Management and we were on the judging panel for the EMMA awards.

Coming up: In December we will be presenting at the CINDEX conference in Paris, delivering a Bite Sized Briefing for Expat Academy and publishing a joint blog with IDCN.
