Luxembourg Parliament votes in favour of direct work access for family members of international employees
20 July 2023On 19 July, the Luxembourg Parliament unanimously voted in favour of Bill 8227 which includes provisions to enable direct work authorisation for eligible family members of international employees. Permits Foundation welcomes this legislative change which should now bring Luxembourg in line with other EU Member States. Barriers to partner employment access had been a source of frustration both for employers and international employee families.
The Bill amending existing labour immigration law is expected to enter into force by September 2023. The provisions will apply to those who hold a residence permit as a family member of a third country national, including the spouse, registered partner and children under 18 (of legal working age). Once the Bill is implemented, work access for dependants of international employees will be open (for any employer) and will include self-employment. The Bill recognises that authorising direct work access for family members is a means to simplify the administrative process and will help to attract needed talent.
